Roland Barthes' Theory of Semiotics       The movie series the Hunger Games is about a game that happens every year. Two children 12-18 are chosen in the 12 districts to go and play in the game. You have to fight to the death and only one person can live. If you win your family and you get to become rich. Only those who live in the districts get picked to play in the games. No one from the capital gets pick for the games, they're the ones who watch it for entertainment. Katniss and Peeta are from the 12th district and made it out together because they were just going to kill themselves if they both couldn't survive the game because they were the last ones standing and didn't want to kill each other.       The objective key concept of the lesson is semiotics. Semiotics is the study of signs and their meanings, the interpretation of messages in a text. Roland Barthes is a French literary theorist. He stated that there is more than one way to read a code and a text has multiple meanings. He studied the relationship between denotation and connotation and analyzed the signification process. Roland Barthes says anything in culture can be a sign and send a specific message. Signs are the smallest units of meaning. Denotation is the literal/primary/original meaning of a sign. The sign is also called a signifier. Connotation communicates meaning based on the context. This is when signs have multiple meaning(signifiers). The connotation is known as the signified. A sign could be a rose. The denotation of a rose could be this flower is a red rose. The connotation of a rose is love and romance. Love is an intense feeling of deep affection.     Studying Media Studies is important because mostly everything is based on the media. There are many media forms. Some media forms are gaming media, outdoor media, and print media. The media I mostly use is digital media. My favorite media product is social media because it's a way to communicate and connect with people, the things people post is entertaining and beautiful, and you can post things that people can like, comment, and share. I love to watch things other people post, such as pictures and videos. The pictures can be pictures they took on trips they go on or a special event. The videos can be of them dancing, acting, telling a story, or doing their makeup. In my age group sometimes, we just want to find something to look at because we're bored, want to look at what is going on in other people's lives, or want to post what's going on in their own lives.
