Movie Research: Setting
Setting refers to the time and/or place that the narrative occurs in. Indoors and outdoors. Setting significant to the film production of a film is because the setting can help convey a message, set the mood, and can overall effect how someone views the movie. The elements of setting are place/location, time period, time of day, culture/moral values, socioeconomic status, mood of scene, message in the scene, and genre of the film.
The place/location is where a scene takes place. The time period is the length of time during which activity occurs or a condition remains. The time of day is a loosely specific period of time, minutes, or hours in duration, especially daytime, or point in time. The culture/moral values are what shapes the society and influence the people who live within that society, like characters in a film. The social-economic status is the position of an individual or group on the socioeconomic scale, which is determined by a combination of social and economic factors such as income, amount and the kind of education, etc. Mood of scene is the emotional atmosphere of a scene. It is the way the story, setting, or scene makes the audience feel. Message in the scene is the message being conveyed in a scene based on what is happening. Genre of the film is a stylistic or thematic category for the motion pictures based on the similarities in the narrative elements, response to the film.
In a Quiet Place (the film my group and I were researching), there were three locations in the film's opening. The first location was the town the characters are currently in. the second location was the store where the characters are introduced to the audience. The third location and last location was on the bridge where one of the first major events occurred. It's the scene where the little boy was killed by the unknown monsters.
