Movie Research: Lighting

     The lighting setup guides the eye to a specific actor, prop, or part of a scene. Lighting is significant because it tells the audience where to look, controls how the audience see things in the frame, reflect the psychology of characters, and defines and supports the genre of the film.       In one scene, Marcus Abbott, which is the eldest son, is scared and Lee Abbott, the father, is talking to him. It is nighttime and there are red lights. The red lights signify heightened emotions, violence, and danger. They are also running in that scene through the grass, and you can see the grass with the little light there is, but you can also see the right lights in the back.

      Color in film illicit certain emotions from the audience and can be encoded symbolics meanings illustrated by a film maker. Color in film is significant because the color palette used in a film can help tell a story and help draw the attention of the user to a specific detail. It can set the overall tone of the film.       Evelyn Abbott is wearing green which signifies corruption, ominous, and danger. She is also wearing beige which signifies reliability, stability, and comfort. This resonates very well with Emily Blunts character. Regan Abbott is wearing a dark blue shirt which signifies ominous, calm, passivity, and isolation.

      Hair and makeup are used to convey a character's status or personality. Hair and makeup are significant because they ate interpretative tools used in film to enhance and describe actor's appearance during a performance and add to the aesthetic of the film. The elements of hair and makeup are tone, style, time, place, and character personality.       Place is setting and where the film take place. Style is techniques a director uses to create a movie and it can include theme, sound, dialogue cinematography and lighting. Time is when the film takes place is important to the aesthetic of the film. Tone is a quality in the voice that expresses the speaker's feelings or thoughts, often toward the person being spoken to.       Costume is the clothes that actors wear that are used to convey a character's status or personality. Costumes are significant because it creates a more realistic aspect in the film and helps actors fit into the role they are playing.       Acting refers to the act of human representation or interpretation of a character within a film. Acting is significant to film production because it can affect what message is trying to be conveyed. It can help the audience what is happening giving certain actions more strength. The elements of acting are actor's appearance, facial expression, body language, vocal qualities, and mannerisms of a character.       An actors appearance is a significant aspect of acting. Whether the actor physically suitable in the role is just as essential as their acting ability. Facial expression conveys an emotion that tells us about the character and the way they react to a situation. Body language is about the way an actor controls their body through gestures, posture, and body contact.      Setting refers to the time and/or place that the narrative occurs in. Indoors and outdoors. Setting significant to the film production of a film is because the setting can help convey a message, set the mood, and can overall effect how someone views the movie. The elements of setting are place/location, time period, time of day, culture/moral values, socioeconomic status, mood of scene, message in the scene, and genre of the film.        The p lace/location is where a scene takes place. The time period is the length of time during which activity occurs or a condition remains. The time of day is a loosely specific period of time, minutes, or hours in duration, especially daytime, or point in time. The culture/moral values are what shapes the society and influence the people who live within that  society ,  like  characters in a film.       Sound in film is used to enhance the movie experience and make it feel realistic for the audience. It includes music, background noise, dialogue, and sound effects. You hear these things while watching a movie.       Music is a vocal or instrumental sounds combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. Music in film is a central component of a film's soundtrack. Music can establish the mood and tone of a movie, communicate elements of the film setting, and psychological states of the characters.        Background noise is an extraneous sound which can be heard while listening to or monitoring other sounds.       Six visual editing techniques are cross cutting, cut away, dissolve, fade, J and L cut, and jump cut. Cross cutting involves two or more separate actions by cutting back to them one at a time. This can create an illusion of both scenes happening all at once, or have the scenes serve as parallels of one another. Cutaway is an abrupt cot from one thing to another. It might mean to cut away from one thing to bring attention to another thing also. It's used to provide irony to a scene or unsettle the audience in some way. Dissolve is one of the most common editing techniques. It's when the visuals of one scene overlapping with the visuals of the incoming one. Fade is similar to dissolve, but they serve different purposes. With a fade, either to white or black, a scene comes to an end. A J cut is when the audio from the next scene is inserted into the current scene before we get to see where the sound is coming from. An L cut is the opposite. It's when the sound from the...
